Dog’s Natural Behavior Is to Smell

It is natural for a dog to sniff and smell everything.  The dog’s smell is one of the strongest of all its senses.  I have a Bernese Mountain Dog, and dogs are looking for many things when smelling and this is a natural dog behavior.  When a family is on a camping vacation with their dog, it is not unusual for the dog to bury its dinner.  The smells of the outdoors and nature make the dog instinctively bury the food that they will smell and find later.  Another natural behavior is for your dog to smell around your house outside in the yard.  One important thing to watch when your dog is smelling and exploring in the yard.  There are bees that will form a nest in the ground in a hole and is not noticeable to dog owners.  Be very careful if your dog smells into the nest, because the dog could get stung and could cause swelling enough to cause the dog to stop breathing.  It is a natural behavior for the dog to explore and smell, but as dog owners, we should walk around our yards and look for any dangers that could hurt our animals.
