Caring for Your Pet Fish

My instruction in how to care for goldfish came from my next door neighbor, Phil, when I was just 7 years old.  Phil seemed to know a lot and told me he had had plenty of goldfish.  Phil was 9.  So I assumed he knew a lot more than me about caring for goldfish.  But it turns out, Phil was wrong about a lot of things, most importantly; you don’t need to clean the tank if you have a water filter.  After saving my money and purchasing a filter, then ignoring the water quality for a week or more, I was astounded to find there was still algae growing in the tank.  It turned out Phil was wrong, you still have to clean a tank when using a filter.  All a filter does is make the time between cleanings longer. I hope Phil finally wised up to this fact, or maybe that’s why he had had so many goldfish over the years.
